Niños de Baja

What we do

La Habra Christian Church takes two mission trips to El Porvenir each year, helping Niños de Baja with building, painting, digging, maintenance and other odd jobs. The members also donate clothing and other items to Niños de Baja.

What Niños de Baja does

Niños de Baja, located in the small, poor Baja town of El Porvenir south of Tecate, is a mission that operates an orphanage and daycare center, and offers a Kindergarten Assistance Program.

Casa del Pastor gives loving, full-time care for infants and toddlers who have been orphaned, abandoned, abused or whose families are impoverished and unable to care for them.

Guardaria del Pastor is a daycare ministry for mothers who must work. There are no welfare programs in Mexico, so the Guardaria allows mothers to leave their child in a clean, safe, Christian environment while they work in the fields or factories.

The Kindergarten Assistance Program makes it possible for 20 children to begin first grade with the same kindergarten experience and knowledge as their peers. These 20 children would not be able to attend kindergarten without our assistance, since their families cannot afford the required costs.

Also, Niños de Baja continues its outreach efforts to the El Porvenir community. Food, clothing and household goods are given to those in need. Niños de Baja offers a variety of other assistance to the community.

Summer Activities Programs are conducted for the community children each year. It has Bible classes, crafts and recreational activities. La Habra Christian Church's own Dayann Porterfield and three others led the program in 2006 as mission interns, who also helped visiting summer mission teams.

Nearly every week, families or groups of people volunteer their time to come to help Niños de Baja.

Inspirational stories:
  • The number of people coming down to do mission work at Niños de Baja is not lost on the local community. Some of the men in town, amazed by all the outside help, decided to do their own mission, even though they were poor and had little or nothing to give. Nevertheless, the Spirit moved them to drive to another poor town near Ensenada and offer their help in the area of mission work. Praise God!
  • Phil Drain, an assistant director at Niños de Baja, told of his favorite infant in the orphanage. Her name is Beatrize. When she came to the orphanage, she would not respond or interact as normal babies do. She was born of a prostitute, who did her business in the car with her baby close by. Now, Beatrize is in a loving, Christian family at Niños de Baja. In her time at the orphanage, she has begun to make noises and interact. Praise God for the care and work of Niños de Baja!
